Frequently Asked Questions

How can I audition to be considered for the 2025 summer intensive programs?

Any student ages 9 and up can audition to be considered for one or multiple summer programs. You can audition to be part of these programs by either: attending an audition class during our audition tour in January or submitting a pre-recorded video for audition review.

What is the cost of the Audition?

  • Audition Class Pre-Registration Cost: $40.00
Audition Class Walk-up/Day of Audition costs: $45.00
    Pre-registration is highly recommended.
  • Video Audition Cost: $45.00

What do I need to bring to the audition?

  • If you have pre-registered – Great! You will only need to bring yourself ready for a ballet class with proper attire and ballet shoes. No images or documents are required. You will receive all necessary items for the class after you check in for the audition – which includes a safety pin and audition number.
  • If you have not pre-registered – No problem! You will only need to bring a form of payment for the registration. Please arrive with enough time before the class to fill out the registration form. No additional images or documents are required.

I am interested in more than one summer program – how can I audition for those programs?

You will need to complete one registration and attend one audition even if you are interested in multiple summer programs. During the audition, students are evaluated by the Artistic staff for each summer program based on age & technical eligibility. If admitted, students will be notified in the result email of the programs that they are invited to attend. The Artistic staff will decide which program(s) are the best fit.

How old do I need to be to audition and what experience should a dancer have?

Auditions are open to students ages 9 – 19.  Please be aware not all cities will offer a class for younger students. At each location there are multiple audition classes for specific age groups. Dancers must be 9 years old on the day of the audition to participate. To submit an audition video student must be 8 turning 9 by the start of the 2025 Summer Programs. All students are expected to have previous ballet training.

Which audition class do I attend?

Each audition class is offered for specific age groups and can vary from city to city. Prospective students should register and plan to audition with the age group according to the age you are on the day of the audition – not based on the age you would be during the summer.

How long are the audition classes while on tour?

Students can expect to take a one (1) hour to hour-and-a-half (1hr 30min) ballet class. Please arrive with plenty of time to check-in and warm up prior to class.

How do I know which program I am being considered for?

During the audition, students are evaluated by the Artistic Staff for each summer program based on age & technical eligibility. If accepted, students will be notified of the invited programs outlined in the invitation email. The program invitation is at the sole discretion of the Artistic Staff.

What should I wear for an audition, and will I need pointe shoes?

When arriving for the audition, prospective students should be prepared with regular ballet clothes.

  • Girls should wear a leotard (any style and color), tights and ballet shoes. Hair must be pulled off the face, in a bun. Girls 11 – 18 should bring pointe shoes, if en pointe. Ages 14 and up, may wear pointe shoes for the audition. If not, dancers with pointe shoes will have a chance to change into pointe shoes after the barre work.
  • Boys should wear a white shirt, black tights, and ballet shoes.

What should I expect for an in-person audition?

Once you arrive for your audition, wait until check-in begins for your age group. A MCB School staff member will be at the desk to greet and check you in. You will receive a number and pin to fasten to the front of your leotard/shirt. After warming-up you will be invited into the studio by MCB School Artistic Staff who will begin the audition. You should expect a regular ballet class with barre work, centre exercise and movement across the floor, and with specific pointe exercises. Once the class has finished, the Artistic Staff will request a group photo in numerical order of all students participating in the audition. This helps the Artistic Staff when reviewing and finalizing the results of the audition class.

Can my parent/guardian/friend watch the audition I am registering for?

No – parents, teachers, or friends will not be allowed to observe the audition, take video or pictures and, at some locations, may not be permitted to enter the building. No exceptions.

I am unable to attend the audition class I registered for, what do I do?

If you can't attend, please contact the school via email, school@miamicitballet.org. to notify us. We will gladly switch your scheduled audition to another day/time/location (at no additional cost). If you can't re-schedule for another class, we can also accommodate by allowing you to submit a video audition for consideration. Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds to prospective students that do not attend the audition.

Can I audition at more than one location?

No, students should register for only one class or video audition.

I am an international student and not based in the US, can I still audition?

Yes! If you are not currently located in the US to register for an audition class, you are welcome to submit a video audition to be considered for the summer programs. Miami City Ballet School is certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) to enroll non-immigrant students on M-1 visas. International students who are invited to enroll in the 5-week summer program will be required to obtain an M-1 student visa in order to attend. Miami City Ballet School staff will provide the student with the form and guidance on how to apply for the visa. All costs related to the M-1 visa application are paid by students.

When and how will I receive my results, and will I get feedback from the audition?

  • Students will be notified of the audition result via email. It is important to enter the correct email address to ensure you will receive results. Results will not be given over the phone. No exceptions. Individual feedback will not be provided for any student during or after the audition class. For feedback inquiries, students are encouraged to seek guidance on development from their regular ballet teacher.
  • Admitted students will be provided instructions for registration along with invited programs in the result email. Results will be sent within 5 - 8 business days after their audition.

How can I register for an audition class at one of the sites on tour?

  • To pre-register for a class, please follow the class registration link to create an account, view available class times and age groups, as well as complete the registration form, and pay the pre-reg fee via Credit Card only.
  • You may also “walk-up” on the day to register on site. At that time, you may pay the audition fee with cash, credit card, or check and complete the registration form.

How can I register and submit my video audition?

For students who would prefer to send a pre-recorded video audition, refer to the link for audition details and video guidelines on what to include in your video. Please follow the link below to create an account, complete the registration form, and submit your video, with 2 photos – headshot and arabesque.

What if I can't attend an audition at any of the cities and dates on tour?

Even if you can't attend a class, you can still audition – send us your video! Video audition is a common method for dancers to be considered for all our school programs.

Can I audition for the year-round program during the summer intensive tour?

  • During our Audition Tour, students are considered for the summer programs only. We do hold auditions specifically for the school year program later in the year. For more information and to be notified when those auditions open, contact school@miamicityballet.org.
  • It is important to note that the best path into the MCBS year-round training program is through the summer programs. During the summer, students are evaluated and considered as candidates for our year-round program.

I received a waitlist result. What does that mean?

A waitlist result means that you have not been immediately offered a spot in the program, but you are still being considered. If additional spots become available after registration deadlines have passed, those on the waitlist may be offered a place. Students on a waitlist are essentially “on hold” and will be notified of a final decision by the end of February once the tour concludes.

I have been accepted to a program; how do I enroll?

Follow instructions provided in your acceptance email. You will need to log in with credentials provided at the bottom of your email.

Can I apply for a scholarship during the audition?

Any scholarships granted are based on merit and are awarded at the time of invitation in your audition result email. Students are unable to apply for any additional scholarship awards for the summer program.

Is it better to audition in-person or with an audition video – what is the difference?

Both options are viable for an audition for MCBS Summer Programs.  If you can audition in person, that would be recommended, however video auditions are always accepted and considered equally.  Please ensure the video audition meets the time parameters of filming.
