The Choreographer
George Balanchine (1904-1983), born in St. Petersburg, Russia, is often referred to as the "Father of American Ballet" for his transformative influence on the art form. He trained at the Imperial Ballet School and danced with the Ballets Russes before emigrating to the U.S. in 1933. In 1948, he co-founded the New York City Ballet and served as its artistic director, creating over 465 ballets during his lifetime.
For Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux, Balanchine created a ballet that feels both spontaneous and precise, filled with thrilling technical feats and moments of breathtaking beauty. It’s a masterclass in musicality, with each step perfectly attuned to the music’s shifts in energy and emotion.
The Score
The Score
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) was a Russian composer whose sweeping melodies and rich orchestrations made him one of the most beloved composers in ballet history. His scores for Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker remain cornerstones of the classical repertoire.
The music for Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux was originally composed in 1877 for Swan Lake but was omitted from the final production. Rediscovered nearly a century later, it was given new life through Balanchine’s choreography. The score’s soaring violin lines and exhilarating tempo shifts create the perfect backdrop for a display of technical brilliance, making Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux a thrilling experience for dancers and audiences alike.

Pointe of Interest
One of the most breathtaking moments in Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux is its dramatic ending: the “fish dive.” In this daring lift, the ballerina dives forward in a deep arch as her partner seamlessly catches and suspends her mid-air. Unlike traditional lifts, this gravity-defying moment demands precision, strength, and trust—leaving audiences on the edge of their seats every time.
