In Balanchine’s The Unanswered Question, a lone ballerina floats through a mysterious world, held aloft by the haunting, otherworldly music of Charles Ives. The second section of Balanchine’s Ivesiana, this piece brings Ives's complex, atonal, and at the time, groundbreaking score—marked by unusual rhythms and quarter-tones—into stunning movement. The Choreographer

George Balanchine (1904-1983), born in St. Petersburg, Russia, is often referred to as the "Father of American Ballet" for his transformative influence on the art form. He trained at the Imperial Ballet School and danced with the Ballets Russes before emigrating to the U.S. in 1933. In 1948, he co-founded the New York City Ballet and served as its artistic director, creating over 465 ballets during his lifetime.

In The Unanswered Question, the second section of his 1954 Ivesiana series, Balanchine paired his choreography with the groundbreaking, atonal music of American composer Charles Ives. The work explores the subtle mystery of silence and unanswered questions, showcasing Balanchine’s ability to merge complex music with exquisite movement. His visionary approach continues to shape the world of ballet, making him one of the most influential choreographers in dance history.

The Score

Charles Ives (1874–1954), an American composer and one of the most innovative musical voices of the 20th century, is known for his bold use of dissonance, complex rhythms, and unorthodox harmonies. A Connecticut native, Ives was largely self-taught and developed a distinctive compositional style that blended American folk music, hymns, and the influence of European classical traditions. His music, often groundbreaking in its experimental nature, was not widely appreciated during his lifetime, but it has since earned a place among the most important works in American classical music.

Ives’s The Unanswered Question (1906), a contemplative and enigmatic piece, is one of his most famous compositions. In this work, he juxtaposes a quiet, meditative string quartet with a brass group playing a series of unresolved, mysterious questions. This thought-provoking piece, which reflects Ives's deep interest in existential questions and the spiritual unknown, perfectly complements George Balanchine's choreography in The Unanswered Question, creating an evocative and haunting fusion of music and movement.
