Red Angels

Choreography

Music

12 Minutes

Red Angels lights up the stage with Ulysses Dove’s razor-sharp choreography and Richard Einhorn’s electrifying violin score. This abstract work, set in a blaze of scarlet, is sleek, daring, and utterly arresting—an intense display of power and precision that pushes the limits of athleticism and artistry.

Created for New York City Ballet’s Diamond Project in 1994, Red Angels tests the boundaries of both the body and the senses. With four dancers performing in unison to Einhorn’s thrilling "Maxwell’s Demon," a solo for electric violin performed by Mary Rowell, the stage is set for a mesmerizing sensory experience. Dove, drawing on the speed and grace of the Balanchine aesthetic, sought to evoke the “angelic” qualities in the dancers while keeping the energy sharp and unrelenting. The result is a breathtaking ballet that marries striking visuals, fierce movement, and a score that’s equal parts art and rock 'n roll.

The Choreographer

Ulysses Dove (1947-1996), born in Columbia, SC, began his dance journey while studying pre-med at Howard University, where he first trained with Carolyn Tate. He later transferred to the University of Wisconsin to study with Xenia Chlistowa of the Kirov Ballet before earning a degree in dance from Bennington College in 1970. After moving to New York, Dove became part of Merce Cunningham’s company and performed with Mary Anthony, Pearl Lang, and Anna Sokolow. In 1973, he joined Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, quickly gaining recognition for his commanding presence, clarity of movement, and dramatic intensity.

Encouraged by Ailey, Dove turned to choreography and, in 1980, created the solo Inside for Judith Jamison. He went on to have a prolific freelance career, choreographing for prestigious companies like Basel Ballet, Royal Swedish Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and New York City Ballet. His choreography was known for its relentless speed, force, and daring sensuality. Dove also choreographed the 1986 Robert Wilson-Philip Glass opera The Civil Wars and had several ballets performed by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. His Red Angels (1994), created for New York City Ballet’s Diamond Project, became an instant hit, as did his final work, Twilight (1994).

His contributions to dance were honored with the Emmy Award-winning Dance in America: Two by Dove on PBS’s Great Performances in 1995.

The Score

The music for Red Angels is as striking and dynamic as the choreography itself. Composed by Richard Einhorn, Maxwell’s Demon is a visceral and electrifying score for electric violin that pulses with intensity and urgency. The music, performed by the innovative American violinist Mary Rowell, seamlessly intertwines classical technique with the raw energy of rock ‘n roll, creating a soundscape that mirrors the relentless pace and dramatic force of Ulysses Dove’s movement. With its daring, unpredictable rhythms and gripping emotional depth, "Maxwell’s Demon" heightens the sensory experience of the ballet, amplifying every leap, turn, and burst of athleticism. It’s a thrilling, electric journey that keeps the audience on the edge of their seat from start to finish.
