Lauren Lovette (b. 1991) is an American ballet dancer and choreographer, known for her transformative work both on stage and in the studio. A former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, Lovette’s career has been marked by her versatility and artistry across a wide range of repertoire, from the classical works of George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins to contemporary pieces by Justin Peck, Alexei Ratmansky, and Christopher Wheeldon.
Lovette’s journey began at the Cary Ballet Conservatory and the School of American Ballet, before joining New York City Ballet in 2009. She was promoted to principal dancer in 2015, captivating audiences with her performances in iconic works and new commissions alike. Beyond her dancing, Lovette emerged as a choreographer with the 2016 creation of For Clara for the company. Her choreography is known for its bold emotional depth, and has earned acclaim for its exploration of power and vulnerability within ballet, as noted by The New York Times in 2019.
In addition to her choreography for NYCB, Lovette has created works for American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company and the Vail Dance Festival, where she also served as Artist-in-Residence in 2019. She has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including musicians, poets, and fashion designers, and her work continues to push the boundaries of classical ballet. In 2021, Lovette left New York City Ballet to dedicate herself fully to choreography and creative exploration. In 2022, she was appointed resident choreographer for the Paul Taylor Dance Company.
