The Choreographer

Pam Tanowitz is a visionary choreographer redefining contemporary dance with her intellectually playful and rigorously crafted movement language. A recipient of the prestigious 2024 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award, she is celebrated for her innovative approach that honors classical and modern dance traditions while reshaping them into something entirely new.

Her work, commissioned by some of the world’s most renowned companies—including The Royal Ballet, New York City Ballet, and Martha Graham Dance Company—blends whimsical complexity with striking unpredictability. With deep roots in the lineage of Merce Cunningham and George Balanchine, Tanowitz creates dances that challenge convention, avoid narrative, and instead transport audiences into poetic worlds of movement, music, and space.

Now, Tanowitz brings her unique choreographic voice to Miami City Ballet with Coincident Dances, continuing her legacy of pushing boundaries and expanding the possibilities of dance today.

The Score

Jessie Montgomery is a GRAMMY-winning composer, violinist, and educator whose music vibrantly fuses classical traditions with improvisation, vernacular influences, and social consciousness. Named Musical America’s 2023 Composer of the Year, her works are celebrated for their dynamic energy, rich textures, and deep emotional resonance. Described as “turbulent, wildly colorful, and exploding with life” (The Washington Post), her compositions are performed by leading orchestras and ensembles worldwide.

Montgomery’s impact on contemporary music continues to grow, including her role as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Mead Composer-in-Residence, a position she began in 2021. Now, her strikingly original voice comes to Miami City Ballet in a new collaboration, bringing her signature vibrancy and depth to the stage.

Costume Design

Harriet Jung and Reid Bartelme are visionary costume designers whose work seamlessly blends fashion and movement. After meeting at the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2009, they began their collaborative design journey in 2011, focusing on costuming for dance. Their striking designs have been featured in works by some of today’s most celebrated choreographers, including Christopher Wheeldon, Justin Peck, Matthew Neenan, Pam Tanowitz, and Kyle Abraham.

Beyond the stage, Jung and Bartelme have created costume-centric performances for institutions such as the Museum of Arts and Design and the Guggenheim Museum. Their design expertise extends to Broadway, where they made their debut with Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ in 2023. With research fellowships at NYU’s Center for Ballet and the Arts and the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, their work continues to evolve, shaping the visual identity of dance productions worldwide.
