Miami City Ballet 2024/2025 Season Continues With Spring Mix And The World Premiere Of Carmen By Annabelle Lopez Ochoa

(Miami Beach, FL — March 5) – Miami City Ballet (Lourdes Lopez, Artistic Director; Juan José Escalante, Executive Director) brings the vibrancy and dynamism of dance to life with Spring Mix and the world premiere of Carmen, the final two offerings of the 2024/2025 season. But first, MCB’s Winter Mix takes its final bow this weekend in West Palm Beach, with performances concluding March 9.

Running March 28–April 13 throughout South Florida, Spring Mix features two company premieres—Pictures at an Exhibition by Alexei Ratmansky and Chaconne by José Limón—alongside Glass Pieces by Jerome Robbins and Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux. This will be followed by the highly anticipated world premiere of Carmen, running April 25–May 4, officially closing out the season.

These performances also serve as the grand finale under the leadership of Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez, who will step down at the conclusion of this season. Tickets are available online at www.miamicityballet.org/ or by phone at 305.929.7010.

SPRING MIX: A DYNAMIC TRIPLE BILL Miami City Ballet’s Spring Mix program showcases a thrilling range of movement and musicality, beginning with the company premiere of Alexei Ratmansky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Set to Modest Mussorgsky’s evocative piano suite, the ballet explores the intersection of music and motion, bringing art to kinetic life. Another company premiere, José Limón’s Chaconne, pays tribute to the legendary choreographer’s Mexican heritage. Originally performed as a solo by Limón himself, this introspective and powerful work, set to Bach’s stirring violin composition, captures the balance between precision and expressive freedom. George Balanchine’s exuberant Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux adds a breathtaking display of classical technique, pairing bravura dancing with the composer’s soaring score in a dazzling tribute to pure ballet. Closing the evening is Jerome Robbins’s electrifying Glass Pieces. A study in perpetual motion, Robbins’s ballet pulses with the urban rhythms of Philip Glass’s hypnotic score, offering a stunning fusion of classical ballet and postmodern innovation.

WORLD PREMIERE: CARMEN BY ANNABELLE LOPEZ OCHOA Closing the season with fire and passion, Miami City Ballet presents the world premiere of Carmen, a new evening-length ballet by celebrated choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. Known for her bold storytelling and striking visuals, Lopez Ochoa brings her signature style to one of the most enduring tales of love, jealousy, and fate. The ballet reimagines Bizet’s classic opera with a fresh score by Colombian-born composer Juan Pablo Acosta, blending the sultry melodies of the original with a contemporary Latinx sensibility. Carmen promises to captivate audiences with its sensuality, drama, and powerful reinvention of a timeless classic. This production serves as a fitting finale to Lourdes Lopez’s remarkable tenure as Artistic Director, capping off her transformative leadership with a bold new work that embodies her visionary approach.
